Padel courts are enclosed by glass and mesh walls specifically so the ball can bounce off them during play, and those same glass panels turn out to be an ideal spot to mount a phone for filming a match from a wide, elevated angle. The problem is that most phone mounts are designed for a car dashboard or a tripod, not a vertical sheet of glass that a ball is going to slam into repeatedly during the match. A single suction cup can hold a phone’s weight just fine sitting still, but it is not enough to resist the vibration and shock of the ball hitting the glass a few centimeters away, which is exactly what tends to knock single-cup mounts loose mid-match.

The picture shows several test versions I created before settling on the final design, which is printed on the right in PLA (red) and ABS (black). My first attempt used a spring mechanism to keep the jaws closed, but it proved to be quite challenging. I eventually opted for a simpler and more reliable solution: interlocking saw teeth.

A spring-loaded clamp sounds like the obvious solution on paper, but designing one that is both strong enough to hold two suction cups under load and easy to print without extra hardware turned out to be a lot more finicky than expected, between finding the right spring geometry, tuning the wall thickness so it would not snap, and getting the initial tension right so it clamped hard enough without over-stressing the print. The interlocking saw-tooth ratchet I ended up with instead skips all of that: you press the two halves together, the teeth catch and hold, and there is no spring geometry to get wrong or wear out over time. As a design lesson, it was a good reminder that the mechanically simplest solution is often the one that survives repeated use best, even if it is less elegant on paper than a spring mechanism.
